Samurai priestess in meditation on armor piece, vintage Japanese porcelain figure, translucent glaze, ceramic female warrior, samurai art
#1408 Porcelain figure of a young priestess sitting on an armor shoulder piece, indicating samurai lineage. Wrapped in a thick shawl, she sits in meditation with one foot raised, a fanciful gesture, perhaps dreaming, perhaps remembering...
White porcelain, with order a clear, light celedon glaze, with a tinge of green depending on the light; a solid, somewhat heavy, very nicely crafted piece. Excellent condition. 5.5"w x 6"d x 4.5"h. C.1950
While the backstory of this young devotee can only be surmised, women of the samurai class were trained to protect the family, and often fought alongside their men in major battles. In recent years there have been many documentaries and dramas on the subject; and female samurai warriors are extremely popular in modern culture.
In 1868 at the battle of Aizu, Nakaro Takeko led an all female corps against an onslaught by the Imperial Army. The battle is celebrated every year at the Aizu Parade, featuring young women warriors.
Also interesting to note that in 1600 Ginchiyo, head of the Tachibana clan, led a troop of her fellow nuns against the advancing Eastern Army.
