The Time Machine and War of the Worlds are among H G Wells' finest work, each being the first and best in its particular science-fiction subgenre and showcasing Wells' sardonic views of mankind and the world. In addition to being a first-rate story, War of the Worlds is a brilliant allegory satirizing European (especially British) colonialism and the utter extermination of unsuspecting masses of humanity by unsympathetic outsiders. None of the movie versions has ever managed to match the sheer power of Wells' original vision of a world upended by alien invaders, so I emphatically urge readers to seek out this gem of a novel.
