Annapurna, Annapurneshwari, Annada or Annapoorna is an aspect of Devi Adishakti and is known as the Hindu Goddess of food and nourishment. Worship and offering of food are highly praised in Hinduism, and therefore, the Goddess Annapurna is regarded as a popular deity. She is a manifestation of the Goddess Parvati, the wife of Shiva.
Anna means "food" and Purna means "filled order completely". Annapurna is the Goddess of the Kitchen and Cooks. Her statues are often found in Hindu Kitchnes for her blessings. It is believed that when food is cooked with the spirit of holiness it becomes alchemy. Annapurna blesses the food and converts it to Amrit (immortality).
It is said that Goddess Parvati was told by Shiva that the world is an illusion and food is a part of it. The goddess became angry and disappeared from the world. Her disappearence brought time to a standstill and Earth became barren. There was no food to be found anywhere and all the beings suffered. However, as a mother Parvati was filled with compassion and reappeared in Kashi and set up a kitchen. Shiva ran to her and presented a bowl in his arms saying that the material world could not be dismissed as an illusion. Parvati smiled and fed Shiva with her own hands.
