A fabulous antique egg iron and clamp. The iron was heated, placed in the clamp and used for a number of ironing jobs. Not only for hat crowns and brims, but also clothing. Towards the end of the 19th century ladies dresses became more flamboyant and had multiple layers, puffed sleeves and ribbons, so the egg iron was ideal for reaching the more awkward areas. It also had the advantage of leaving both hands free.
