What is Madhubani Art?
Madhubani (« Forest of Honey ») is a traditional Art that originates from Madhubani district in the State of Bihar, India. It is said to have started 2500 years back style of Art disappeared before being rediscovered and popularised in 1934.
The modern Madhubhani Art is now painted on handmade and recycled paper, canvas and clothes and depicts also scenes from nature (animals, plants, tress, sun, moon…). The painters use natural paints and dyes made by hand using a paste from rice powder, charcoal, leaves, berries, spices and other natural substances like cow poo, and they create the paintings with various brushes, bamboo sticks, twigs and matchsticks.
The paintings I sell are all unique pieces and mostly created by women (70% of the artists are females) who live in a village in Bihar. These artworks create employment, empowrerment and social interaction for the painters.
