The name "Black-eyed Susan" comes by one account from a romantic reference to a beautiful woman extolled in a poem by a noted English poet, John Gay (1685-1732) during the Elizabethan Era. The story tells of a lady who comes to see her sailor sweetheart about to embark on a mission at sea. So the tale goes that she visited the ship to wish her beau, William, safe return and a final farewell before departing. It is thought that this story was carried to the shores of America by colonists who gave the name, "Black-Eyed Susan" to the native American plant. order
