Upcycled Denim Reverse Appliqué Bag - Denim Skull Purse - Day of the Dead order Purse - Hand Embroidered Clutch with Strap- Goth Cottage Core
I was thinking of Halloween and Day of the Dead when I designed this.
I was thinking of Halloween and Day of the Dead when I designed this one of a kind clutch... But now I feel this skull with the wren's nest is about renewal as much as anything. I love the idea of the new being born out of the old. That's what I am doing here in a way; Making new out of the old. The exterior of this bag is upcycled denim with a hand embroidered reverse appliqué detail on the front of a wren nesting in a skull. (My daughter suggested this clutch is goth meets cottage core). The appliquéd skull detail and lining fabric are organic cotton, and the strap on this bag is removable if you want to clutch your clutch.
Those of you who know me know I'm passionate about sustainable fashion and the environment. I believe in working with reclaimed fabric...Especially denim, as it takes 180 gallons of water to make one new pair of jeans. But I must admit, I enjoy working with upcycled fabric for its own sake also. I love the serendipity of finding something second hand I could never find in a fabric store, and the challenge of using as much of the garment as possible to make something new and keep that fabric in rotation and out of the landfill. Each garment has its own fades, creases, tears, and gives me a new template to work with. When I make a bag from reclaimed fabrics the resulting purse or clutch has a look all its own because the fabric it was made with has its own history. On top of that, because most of the fabric (and some of the hardware) used here is reclaimed, Flowering Hedge Design has a very tiny carbon footprint. Each piece order is one of a kind slow fashion that was made with a passion for sustainability and craftsmanship, from the smallest zippered pouch to the biggest tote bag.
