TEOTIHUACAN OBSIDIAN MIRROR

This beautiful obsidian mirror comes from San Martin de las Piramides.

SAN MARTIN DE LA PIRAMIDES is a population settled next to the pyramids of Teotihuacan.
The artisanal work of obsidian is a trade that dates back hundreds of years, specifically from Pre-Hispanic times as a highly specialized activity.
Obsidian is a volcanic glass that forms when the lava cools abruptly. Thanks to its physical characteristics was used to manufacture cutting tools
and various order objects and ornaments such as scepters, nose rings, arrows, mirrors, sculptures, jewelry, masks, containers, knives, darts, etc.

Due to its characteristic black color and volcanic origin, it was related to the fire element, it was believed that it came from the underworld and
is considered a magical and sacred stone by the Teotihuacans and today people which is able to catch and protect from bad energies.

Also for its characteristic as raw material and its symbolism, the specialization in the work of obsidian came to have a great development and extended to art,
agriculture, religion, cooking, war and architecture, becoming even the economic sustenance of societies and even today, its exploitation and the manufacture
of various objects that are the sustenance of families in areas close to the sites persist.

Near this ancient city of the State of Mexico, Teotihuacán, have been found deposits that were exploited and controlled for years by its inhabitants.
One of these deposits is in Otumba and another -the most important- very close to Pachuca, Hidalgo, is known as the Sierra de las Navajas, famous
for its green obsidian.
The most common is black, but there are other colors that range from dark green to light, brown, violet, some blue, red, even white and transparent.

Note: Obsidian being a stone some times brings with it the veins of the stone, which is part of its beauty, also being stones they are not perfect.

Note: Try to see the sun through the mirror.
