Large Vintage Olinala Lacquerware Wood Tray Black Multicolor, 18" order x 12", Mexican Folk Art, Southwestern Home Interior, Living Room Decor
This painted lacquered rectangular tray is from the town of.
This painted lacquered rectangular tray is from the town of Olinalá in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, which is not only a center of folk art but also the largest producer of lacquerware in the country. To make the trays, artists build up layers of "maque," which is a mixture of linseed oil and natural clays, which when combined with natural pigments, create vibrant colors. The maque dries and then the artist etches detailed and fanciful designs into the maque, and then the whole thing is burnished to create a sheen. In looking at and touching the tray, it's hard to know, without knowing the process, exactly what material it's made of. This particular tray is gorgeous with large amounts ofand black, which helps the array of other colors pop. We see yellow, red, blues, white, and green, among other colors. The detailed, almost pointillist style painting method is classic Olinala, and this particular piece is a great representation of that traditional artwork. Also classic is the floral designs, absolutely beautiful in order this piece. There are some spots where something has adhered to the tray--this is not new but rather at least 20 years old, so expect some wear.
Measures about 18" wide by 12" high and about 1" tall. Again, expect some scuffing and other signs of wear, although overall in quite good vintage condition. Weighs 1.10 pounds unpacked.
Beautiful art that is functional.
