The green tara is one of the most famous bodhisattvis of Tibetan Buddhism. It is considered the main form in the mandala of the 21 Taras, each expressing different facets of their Buddha activities.
The green Tara embodies the awakened compassion of all existing Buddhas and is also intended to protect against the eight types of fear.
These eight types of anxiety are:
External danger (fears) / Internal correspondence
1. Lion / Pride
2. Elephant / Veneer
3. Fire / Wrath
4. Snake / Envy
5. Robbers / False Views
6. Prison / Stinginess
7. Flood / Desire
8. Demons / Doubts
Representation:
The green tara is usually depicted on a double-orbiting lotus throne, with its right foot resting on a lotus flower. Two more lotus tendrils rise around them. Her right hand shows the mudra of favor (Varada Mudra), while her left hand holds a lotus flower/bud/tendril. These three elements represent the Buddhas of the three times – the past (Kāshyapa), the present (Shakyamuni) and the future (Maitreya).
Green Tara Meaning:
In particular, she is credited with the strength that she can increasingly fulfill all desires within the framework of her powers.
Especially in the fulfillment of wishes and the protection against dangers, she rushes to help. She is the one who brings you over safely, over the stream of existences.
This characteristic is symbolized in particular by their sitting posture ready to stand up.
Although the Tara is also meant to fulfill worldly desires, her real concern is order to lead practitioners to enlightenment. In this way, the eight fears that the green tara protects against can also be understood as symbols of the inner obstacles along the way.
Their mantra is: OM TARE TUTARE TURE SOHA.
Greeting and honor of the kind Tara, the Savior,
that frees us from our fears
and which helps us,
to go through all the heaviness.
Tara also means star or constellation. However, it has been given 108 other honorary names, which correspond to the 108 pearls of the Tibetan prayer chains Mala. The earliest depiction of the Tara can be found in cave temples from the 6th century in Elora and Ajanta. According to the Indian tradition and derivation, the Tara is a manifestation or embodiment of the mother of Buddha, the Maya Devi.
