“Tenango embroidery”
Tenango embroidery originates from the municipality of Tenango de Doria in the State of Hidalgo, Mexico. Hence its name. Those who embroider these works of art are mostly Otomi indigenous people. At first, embroidery was an exclusive activity for women in the region, but today it is an activity in which, regardless of gender or age, everyone participates equally.
What characterizes this embroidery is the combination of colors and those very particular designs in which the embroiderers represent their environment. They are common among others, the designs with flora and order fauna of the region and scenes of the daily life of its inhabitants.
The work is usually so precise and dense that it is hard to believe that they are made by hand. It is such a laborious job that depending on the size of the embroidered piece, the elaboration can takes from just a few days to several years.
