Vintage Baby Doll in Indian Basket, Woven Bassinette, Sweet Grass Cradle, 1800s, Composite order Head, Straw Body, Christmas Gift for Her
This listing is for a Rare Vintage Baby Doll in a Hand.
This listing is for a Rare Vintage Baby Doll in a Hand Woven Cradle or Bassinette. This adorable baby I believe dates to order the 1870s and appears to be unmarked but is a hand crafted Indian basket and has the characteristic loops. The baby's body and upper limbs are stuffed cloth (looks like straw/sawdust) and the head and lower limbs appear to be early composite. Early composition doll torsos and upper limbs were often made of stuffed cloth, with the composition reserved for the doll's arms and legs. I am not a doll expert though! The doll is swadled in a handmade muslin gown with ric rac trim then has a baby blue (faded) receiving blanket wrapped around with a ribbon. Intricately hand embroidered blankets line the cradle. The ivory blankets are stitched with pink and ivory thread. The baby's face is hand painted. The material the head is made from is very porous appearing. Check the photos carefully for more details. The baby measures about 5.25 inches in length, and the cradle is about 6.25 inches long by 3.5 inches wide by 4 inches high. The hand crafted basket/cradle is still strong and in great vintage condition. The loops at the bottom that serve as rockers are bent but not damaged. You may notice a white residue on the top of the cradle in the photos but I easily removed this. This lovely baby and cradle have been in my own collection of goodies for over 30 years so it has been well cared for. This adorable baby is an unusual find...it would make a very special gift for anyone who appreciates nice vintage things or an antique doll collector. It would make a very special gift!
