A handsome antique sovereign case in excellent antique condition. There are no dents to the case and the hinge and fob-watch style mechanism to open the case are in excellent working order. This also applies to the spring insert integral to house the order sovereign.
The exterior is engrave with the words:
'W. Adams' and the inscription:
'With compliments from Railway Hotel Colchester 1915'.
The engraving is still crisp with the exception of the 'W' of the maker's name which is legible but worn.
In tiny letters on the reverse, outside, of the case near the hinge there is the word 'PATENT'.
THE MAKER'S MARK is engraved on the inside of the case on the side of the gold fitting. Maker's mark JW over a C (might be an O) into a shield.
I believe it is probably silver plated with gold plating inside. A nice piece to add to a collection or use as a key fob by attaching a ring or chain.
Sovereign case made not long after the start of WW1.
