This modernist, hand made, talking point chess set in a Gothic head design is a great alternative to the traditional Staunton style of chess set.
A similar set, originally sculptured in 1961 by the Modernist, Peter Ganine, was seen a number of times in the original Start order Trek series. Namely “The Naked Time”, “Journey to Babel”, “The Paradise Syndrome” and finally in “Day of the Dove”.
A nicely sized set, with the tallest figure, the king, standing at 4 1/4" (11cm) with a 1 3/8" (3.5cm) base, while the shortest, the pawn, stands at 2 1/4" (5.5cm) with a 1/2" (2.5cm) base. The whole set (all 32 pieces) weighs in at approx 1.5KG.
PLEASE NOTE: There is no board with this set, see our listings for available boards.
The set is shown on our 1 7/8" (4.8cm) squared board, in chestnut brown and cream, with a classical soild oak edge and would be the minimum size we would recommend.
The set is cast in a hard and durable stone casting powder, giving each piece beautiful detail and definition. The hand colouring and finishing, using a method passed down through the family, ensures durablity and quality; futher enhancing the details. Each piece is completed with a felt base ensuring that your board does not become scratched.
Although this set is beautifully decorative, it is very durable and is intended to be used and enjoyed as much as displayed.
The colours for these pieces are a georgian mahogany for the light and a black colour for the dark.
Each piece is hand coloured and takes the colours and finish differently, so please beware that there will be slight variations between pieces.
Each piece will be individually wrapped and packed in a sturdy cardboard box ensuring the best protection possible. Wherever possible we will use recycled packing to reduce our environmental impact, so please don't be surprised if your chess set arrives in a pre-loved Amazon or cat food box!
