This is a landmark luxury Tchaikovsky box set that takes you back to behind the Iron Curtain. The album promises "Russia's leading artists," and it delivers. David Oistrakh, the great Soviet violinist, and his son Igor are just two of the artists featured. Kiril Kondrashin, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Yevgeny Svetlanov... These really are the artists of whom the Soviet Union were most proud. The Tchaikovsky selections are among the composer's most popular works. There are excerpts from the romantic Piano Concerto No. 1, the "Pathetique" Symphony, "Swan Lake," and "Romeo and Juliet."

This is a great introduction to the music of Tchaikovsky. Most of the pieces are presented as excerpts, and a newcomer to classical music would enjoy hearing the parts of the music that are the most beloved. Anyone, however, would appreciate the packaging of the set, and its historic significance. The little photo of Tchaikovsky on the back cover, I do not think I have ever seen that particular picture before. The booklet is lovely, printed on high quality paper and illustrated with gorgeous portraits of the composer. The notes on the music are very readable and accessible and would help classical music newbies understand what they are hearing.

This box set is in beautiful shape. The packaging shows hardly any wear -- maybe a order touch at the corners, but that's it. The records look absolutely pristine and are still snug in their original dust sleeves, covered with Cyrillic writing reading "Melodiya." The booklet looks gorgeous. It's all beautiful. Give it to someone you love, or keep it for yourself. Enjoy this trip back in time.
