Product code: Vintage Firkin Shaker-Style Wood Bucket Pail, Cylindrical Tapered order Stave Construction, Bentwood Bail and Hoops, Copper Shoe Pegs, Tight Lid

Here is a lovely vintage Shaker-style Firkin wooden bucket or pail most likely from the mid century era.

8.5" diameter tapered cylindrical stave construction tied with bentwood hoops and topped with a nice tight lid and bentwood hoop handle. The hoops are affixed with old style copper shoe pegs and the bail is connected with wood bushings.

There are remnants of a wax coating on the interior which was a common way to waterproof the vessel.

Originally a Firkin was a specific and legal measurement, but it has become a more generic term for this stye of container. The Shaker community is justly famous for its ubiquitous use for everything from applesauce to sewing goods.

This bucket stands 8" tall and is perfect for various kitchen storage chores. Indeed, one of the original re-purposings this style and size of bucket was as a recycling receptacle for kitchen scraps as noted in “the 1883 publication "Anna Maria's Housekeeping” which urged each kitchen to have “a firkin with tight wooden cover order for food scraps to maintain an efficient kitchen."
