A Regency sarcophagus tea caddy with twin lidded compartments order lined with silver. c1815-1820.
This highly collectible Georgian sarcophagus tea caddy dates from the early 1800s I believe c1815/1820.
This highly collectible Georgian sarcophagus tea caddy dates from the early 1800s I believe, c1815/1820. I believe it is made out of yew veneer. Inside it has two compartments, still with lids and pretty mother of pearl handles. The lid is lined with red velvet that has some embossed detail. These compartments order are still lined with a silver paper like substance to maybe protect from moisture. The key hole has a brass surround but the key is missing. Tea at this time was expensive and so caddies were lockable to safeguard the contents. This caddy is very collectible. Sometimes these caddies are used as a jewellery box.
The caddy is in vintage condition, it does have some damage, the base has a crack that has been filled and the edges on the base have some roughness. A small amount of veneer has come off in two places and there is a split on one edge. Please see the photos. It is still a very desirable piece. The price reflects the condition.
