Product code: Early 20th Century German Sterling Silver Caddy Spoon, Ludwig Neresheimer & Co, order Hanau, 1912

Here we have an ornate Early 20th Century Sterling Silver Caddy Spoon. The spoon has a portrait finial, possibly of George III in a frame with swagged decoration. The bowl has an embossed image of a man sewing seeds in a field and a pierced rim. The back of the spoon is plain.

The caddy spoon is made in Hanau, Germany by Ludwig Neresheimer & Co and imported into England by Berthold Hermann Muller in 1912. Berthold Muller senior came from Hanau to London in 1892 and set up a shop in London's Wardour Street specialising in imported German silver. He and his son Berthold Hermann Muller had particularly close ties with Neresheimer & Co and their marks are often seen together on pieces imported into England.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 110 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The caddy spoon is 12.5cm / 4.9ins long and 6.1cm / 2.4ins across the bowl. It weighs a very respectable 31.9g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The front of the bowl has a full set of English Import hallmarks showing the 925 stamp for Sterling Silver, the Leo astrological sign for a London import, the date letter r for 1912 and the B.H.M mark for Berthold Hermann Muller. The underside of the bowl has the letter n in a shield, a lion rampant and a bunch of grapes, all symbols of Ludwig Neresheimer & Co alongside a B.H.M mark for Berthold Hermann Muller, showing this spoon was made specifically for his London store. order
