This beautiful piece of Notgeld (German small change currency issued in the wake of WW1 due to a shortage of coins and metals) was issued on Dec. 1 1918, a mere 3 weeks after the Great War ended in order Germany's defeat.
Though much of the country lay in ruins, the bill sublimely expresses the spirit of Christmas. It shows St. Nick trudging through the snow carrying a nostalgic array of Old World toys, dolls and puppets. The scene is framed by an ornate green trellis. The equally ornate reverse displays a lion on a gold shield. Wavy line watermarks in the paper add another dimension of delight.
