Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and ranges in color from an almost colorless pale blue to blue-green or teal however the most prized color is a deep-blue aqua color. It is 7.5-8 on the Mohs scale of hardness and gets its name from Latin words meaning water and sea. Aquamarine and emerald belong to the same family, but they are surprisingly different. Aquamarine and emerald are both beryllium aluminum silicates. The color of emeralds is the result of trace amounts of chromium (and vanadium) whereas the color of aquamarine is the result of iron impurities within colorless beryl crystal.
