Batik tulis is the most traditional form of batik in the country of Indonesia. It uses a technique called wax resist dyeing, and the entire process can take anywhere from 1 month to even a year. Due to the complex process and effort, batik tulis is the most expensive form of batik. The designs, motifs, and colors of the batik can depict the origin or region, societal status, and purpose of usage.

Since the ancient Chinese visited the north coast of Java, the city of Lasem became known as "Little China". Many of the ancient temples and other architecture there have a very strong Chinese influence. Due to the trading activity that occurred on the port city of Lasem, batik tulis from this area resulted in the acculturation of Javanese and Chinese culture. Some historians also believe that Lasem was the place where Chinese traders first landed in Indonesia. During the 13th century AD, Admiral Cheng Ho landed at the port city of Lasem and from there, the Chinese migrated to Kudus City, Demak, and other Javanese regions. The Chinese immigrants grew and lived their lives with the people of Lasem. Because of this, many Chinese people influenced the colors and motifs of Indonesian batik. For example, Lasem batik has Chinese characters and even motifs of dragons and Hong birds.
