Gothic leather coffin shape belt pouch. High gloss black front & back, softer leather belt loop & sides, purple suede trim, purple cloth lined interior, antler button.
This style of pouch dates back to the mid 1660's, in London England. At least, that's when my ancestors started making them. It was designed as a simple container to hold small items that would help family members, and church officials, identify a person's body when it was dug up for periodic review. This was especially important for mass graves during the great plaque outbreaks, and for those whose religious beliefs required review and evaluation for sainthood. My ancestors took up crafting these as a means to stay in business during "The Last Great Plague of London", and as a service to the families of those who fell victim to the disease.
Drawing inspiration from my family's history, I crafted this series of pouches using a high quality waxed "shoe" leather for the front and back panels, and lining their interior faces with a purple cotton fabric. For the sides, belt loop, and "loop stop", I used a slightly lighter weight chap leather. The button and loop closure makes use of latigo lace and a handcrafted whitetail antler button, along with the loop stop for easy tightening of the loop. The trim is a soft purple, yet durable, pigskin suede leather. order
