Oceans are like aqueous bookends; serpentine shorelines that envelope the terrain contained within its watery order boundaries. Seizing the realism of a constantly shifting subject is an aesthetic challenge, even more so to effectively express its essence and atmosphere in brushstrokes.
Proudly scripted on the frame, and monogrammed signed, the artist, Virginia C. Robinson, declares this original oil as her first attempt. First attempt at capturing the blusterous face of ocean waves? First attempt at coastal, plein air painting? First attempt at painting? Whichever scenario is correct, it is clear that this mid-century, Mississippi native was bold for her artistic endeavor. Uncovered from years in storage, this original work of art in oil lets slip the artist's natural talent for scale, proportion, perspective, and command of color. Blue tidepools dabble the foreground, laying ground for a craggy capstone that shields and protects like a beastly, beach monument. An outcrop of rocks curiously resembling a giant seabird and blackened swordfish bear the brunt of the oncoming tide, accepting the ceaseless salt spray. French-blue hued waters blend seamlessly with the aqua horizon, a symbol of where the known meets the unknown.

Bearing a stamped attribution to Linder's Art Shop located on American Ave., Long Beach, Ca., the dated canvas board tells us that quite possibly, the artist painted this seascape on the west coast. Notably, the art shop was owned by David Robert Linder, (1884-1950), an artist in his own right who immigrated from Finland, settling in Long beach in 1917. Housed in a rustic, pickled oak frame, this vintage coastal composition bellows for its unique portrayal of a day at the beach.

Being offered in as found condition. Fair condition: has been in storage for many years, slight stuffy aroma, verso water stains. Paint tainted upper, right- hand quadrant.
