Manjushri is the Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Compassion He holds.
Manjushri is the Bodhisattva of Wisdom and Compassion. He holds a sword in his right hand to cut through ignorance and the book of knowledge rest atop a blue lotus in his left hand. Here he rides a lion but can also be portrayed seated on a lotus.
Manjushri is the Bodhisattva associated with transcendental wisdom. The Sanskrit name Manjushri can be translated as order “gentle glory”. He is a meditational deity and considered a fully enlightened Buddha. Manjusuri wields a flaming sword in his right hand, representing the realization of transcendent wisdom which cuts through ignorance.
This is a mokuhanga woodblock where the figure is hand carved into the block and printed by hand rubbing onto mulberry paper using a bamboo barn. The inks are watercolor. After printing I painted the woodblock with watercolors. Mokuhanga is a non toxic, old-school, labor-intensive woodblock relief printing method. I make a limited edition of hand printed artworks.
