Early 20th century handwoven, hand dyed mud cloth textile from the Bogolan region of Mali, West Africa. The design is hand painted using fermented clay as a resist and therefore each piece is the unique expression of the individual artist. The cloth would make an excellent shawl or throw. Old mud cloth textiles are extremely rare and almost impossible to find; virtually all pieces currently on the market are new.
The textile is handwoven in 5" (12.5cm) wide strips which are hand order sewn together to form one large cloth and design is quite minimalist and modern. This piece is in elegant shades of light brown and natural cream colored cotton. The textile is 31" (79cm) wide x 60" (152cm) long with a 1/2" fringe. There is one very subtle stain and slight fading across the textile [see photos]. The textile has been woven from raw, unprocessed cotton. It is in very good condition given its age and origins. The last photo shows a styling idea, not the piece listed for sale.
I recommend hand washing separately with cold water and mild soap. This piece has already been washed and can be used immediately.
