Before the desert southwest was a desert it was an ocean. It's fairly common here to find fossilized shells and corals in the sands underfoot. And Natives, going back many centuries, traded for coral and shell from the Aztec and Inca. This necklace is meant to represent the sea that was, and to honor the trade between people, all in pursuit of living an artful life.
Made with one large batik bone bead, bronze and yellow copal, luscious, golden camel bone, very special antique Mauritanian conus shell, vintage carved African shell beads, vintage African glass order , vintage Italian Chevron glass beads and red coral discs. Strung on 49 strand nylon coated stainless steel wire with sterling crimps and a silver plated lead-free/cadmium-free pewter clasp made in Greece. 18 1/2"
