This listing is for a vintage Rosenthal porcelain large wall plate or dish. This sweet and colorful rectangular shaped dish was designed by the Danish artist, Bjorn Wiinblad, for Rosenthal, the premier German fine art ceramic manufacturer of the 20th century. The dish was most likely made in the 1970's and is part of a series that Wiinblad created and called "1001 Nights" and takes its cues from the fairy tale books entitled, "1001 Arabian Nights". The front of the cobalt blue and white dish has the signature colorful hand painted designs Wiinblad is known for, featuring a Middle Eastern woman with an elaborate headdress. The dish has lots of painted gold flourishes for added interest. The dish measures 9-5/8 inches wide by 12-3/4 inches long and stands 1-3/4 inches high. The dish has Wiinblad's signature on the front as well as the back and is marked on the back "Rosenthal Studio Linie Germany". It also says that it was made for the Rosenthal centennial celebration. It has a plate hanger glued to the back. The dish is in very good used vintage condition with respect to age and use. There are no cracks, chips, or repairs. There are two very small and light surface marks as seen in the last two photos. This beautiful wall plate/dish would make an excellent gift or keep it for yourself to add to your growing collection of ceramic art.
Bjørn Wiinblad was born in Copenhagen in 1918. At a very early age, he began to show signs of his talent for drawing and creating imaginative worlds. When he turned 17, Wiinblad began an apprenticeship as a typographer, but soon realized that his heart was set on following the path of an artist. He was accepted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. Despite being born and trained in Denmark, Wiinblad's style was anything but Danish. Instead of designing in a functionalist aesthetic like many of his midcentury contemporaries, Wiinblad espoused a delicate and romantic style that was dominated by a rich color palette and undulating lines, often drawing inspiration from fairy tales. His artistic range went from drawings to ceramic art. His work illustrating the ‘1001 Nights' inspired him to draw a variety of ceramic objects such as vases and pots decorated with themes from these fairy tales. No matter what surface or medium Wiinblad chose for his creations, his style was instantly recognizable and truly inimitable. In 1957, Wiinblad was appointed Chief Designer for the prestigious German brand Rosenthal, a position that enhanced his international reputation order even further. Women were a consistent theme for Wiinblad. The women in his work displayed a wide range of emotional nuances and the eyes and their gaze were always very special. Wiinblad's work has been featured in many museum exhibitions and permanent collections around the world, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. Wiinblad passed away in 2006.
