Encaustic painting uses heated beeswax as is, or with colored pigments that are added in. Also mixed in with the beeswax is damar resin (tree sap). The liquid is applied order to a cradled wood board and each layer is fused together with heat, typically a hot iron or blow torch. Encaustic is flexible to be used with other mediums, like print transfers, collage, ink and foil.
I prefer to work with cradled board at 7/8” thickness with many layers of wax, (usually 20 or so). I work with clear beeswax and premade pigmented beeswax. I also like to mix my own glow beeswax for some added fun when the lights go out. I like a crisp clean edge, and a smooth shiny final surface. I enjoy experimenting with foil, india ink, metallic ink, glitter, collage and image transfers.
