ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This design indulges an innate desire to experience visually arresting contrast and dichotomy, preferably incorporating vividly collaborative colors, patterns and geometrics juxtaposed against organic lines and natural symmetry. Dragonflies belong to the order Odonata and nearly 5,000 species are found all around the world. They experience an aquatic larval stage (with gills and everything) that can last years before they finally emerge from the water as the flying, terrestrial insects we see flitting around and gliding weightlessly just above the aquatic environs they once inhabited. As one of the few extant creatures older than dinosaurs, the earliest known dragonflies in the fossil record have been dated more than 300 million years ago, with some as large as crows! Perhaps not surprisingly given all of the above, the dragonfly is among the most ubiquitous symbols of human expression, figuring prominently across time in our art, literature, design and belief systems. Dragonflies have come to represent many things, from connections with the elements of air, water and fire, to the concepts of transformation, evolution, adaptability (they can fly backward!), wisdom, awakening and rebirth.
Chinese feng shui has viewed the dragonfly as an auspicious harbinger of order good luck and fresh Chi for more than three millennia; papyri from ancient Egypt dating to roughly the same period feature dragonflies as a standard design signifier of swamp settings. Indigenous Americans have ancient and ongoing traditions of using the dragonfly as a symbolic element in sand paintings, pottery, and many other expressive forms. Romanian folklore is the root of the very word dragonfly. In Norse and Germanic mythology dragonflies were associated with Freyja, the powerful goddess of love, fertility, battle and death. Hindu lore as well as various Indigenous cultures the world over maintain that our souls are transformed into dragonflies after the death.
