Traditional Batik Cap - PARANG #1
4" x 9"
Only 1 available.
All caps have a handle similar to the one in the second picture. The picture of the handle is just an example and not the actual one you will receive.
These traditional caps are from different batik workshops in Java, and include both traditional antique motifs as well as more modern motifs. The traditional motifs all have specific meanings and are used for specific occasions in Java. The traditional motif caps range in age from 10-50 years old. The more modern motifs are most likely from the last 25 years of production.
The caps are made from copper which is cut, bent, and fitted to match the artwork by the craftsmen called "tukang membuat cap". These caps take from a few days (for the smallest) to 3 weeks (for largest) to make by hand. The more difficult and complex to make the higher the pricing.
These caps are all serviceable but not in perfect condition.
Minor repairs have been made to restore to original condition if possible.
They can be used to stamp wax, cold wax, pigment, and thickened dye with good results. With paint sticks or using a "rubbing" method, more great results are possible. Caps also make great conversation pieces or wall hangings, especially order when the handle is removed and mounted in a shadow box frame.
5% of all sales at our Lunn Fabrics Etsy store go to support Ganesa Library in Solo, Java, Indonesia. All caps have handles for use in batik production.
