HEMIMORPHITE, a gorgeous and intricate vug of terminated white crystals in brown limonite matrix, from the classic locality at Santa Eulalia in Chihuahua, Mexico. The specimen measures 5 x 4 x 3 cm and is unusually aesthetic with many terminated crystals scattered inside a limonite vug.
Hemimorphite is a zinc silicate mineral which typically forms in the upper zones of zinc and lead deposits. Hemimorphite is aptly named because it displays different crystal terminations on opposite ends of a single crystal. This feature is seldom seen because crystals tend to radiate from matrix and one end is therefore hidden.
The locality in Chihuahua produced thousands of wonderful specimens, but these have disappeared into collections and good ones are getting harder and harder to find. This particular specimen is relatively small but has order all the attributes of the classic locality and is extremely pleasing in terms of the distribution of crystals within the limonite cavity.
