Product code: Vintage Antique Victorian Art Deco Art Nouveau order Silver Marcasite Ivy Leaf Pendant/ Brooch

For your consideration is an antique Victorian marcasite brooch. The beautiful Art Nouveau brooch features a shimmering silver ivy leaf studded with hand set faux diamond marcasite stones. The back secures with a trombone catch. The stem portion is looped and closed off...I believe it could be worn as a pendant on your favorite chain. The stem is stamped however I am unable to make out the maker marks. Approximately 1 3/4" x 1 1/2". About 14.22 grams. Victorians were known for their symbolism in jewelry... Ivy symbolizes fidelity because it won't easily let go of something it's attached itself to, and eternal life because the plant is evergreen. In ancient Egypt ivy was dedicated to Osiris, who represented immortality. In ancient Greece ivy was the plant of Dionysus because of its vigour. "Marcasite stones have been called Black Diamonds, Tears of the Moon, and Stones of Fortune. From Queen Victoria who ruled England in the 1800's to Greta Garbo who ruled the silver screen, great women have always looked for order marcasite to impart softness and drama." Marcasite jewelry is nearly always made with silver settings. Marcasite jewelry was worn as early as 1700 or even before, but gained popularity particularly during the mid-Victorian era as it was appropriate for mourning wear. It continued to be worn throughout the Art Deco period as a less expensive alternative to diamonds. Even into the 1980s, it was considered appropriate jewelry for young women as it gave some glitter and glamor at a low cost.

Things to consider when looking out for old marcasite jewelry are:
1) Is it hallmarked? If it is a quality piece it should have a silver stamp of some kind. If it is not stamped as silver, the chances are it is not a quality piece.

2) Many pieces were made in Germany before the Second World War for export. If it is marked GERMANY, it might well be prewar.
