Antique Threaded Lid Wood Canister

One does not run across these treenware canisters very frequently - they are more commonly found in Britain and Europe - this is a really nice one, and a good example of the craftsmanship that is required. They were very popular during the 18th century, especially when travelling to carry and protect medicinal pills and powders, as well as breakables such as glass inkwells and perfumes.

In as found/used/untouched condition - the attractiveness of this piece lies in its simplicity and the patina which is wonderful - not sure what kind of wood was used (apparently boxwood or a fruitwood was favoured), but it has aged and mellowed beautifully with time and touch - there are no structural flaws - no cracks or chips - there are some exterior and interior stains, which look like ink (view photo #4 & #7), confirming this canister served a purpose.

I am truly in awe every time I pick up this canister and unscrew the lid - the skill of the turner is order amazing.

Specs:
height is approximately 3.5 ins
diameter is approximately 2.5 ins

A great addition to ones unique stash of antique collectables or a superlative gift for that wood worker.

Note: not familiar with boxwood or various fruitwoods - my research indicates that they are durable and lend themselves well to being turned on a lathe - also expensive.
