Cranes obi bundle, 9 pieces, gold and earth tones, brocade obi pieces from great condition vintage Japanese obi (wide kimono belts) order
Here are 9 lovely condition and collectible vintage japanese obi pieces cut by me.
Here are 9 lovely condition and collectible vintage japanese obi pieces cut by me from the loveliest Japanese obi (wide belts) purchased by me about 15 years ago. So gorgeous and they are very
compatible color-wise to each other for usage in a group and the theme is very close. Textile B and C were sold to me as 1970s or prior and Textile A was estimated as 1970s or 1980s.
So it is wonderful that these 40-50 textiles show no viewable wear, as they were apparently stored well when I bought them
The CRANES motif in Japan has many positive meanings for many centuries in Japan where cranes are universally regarded as symbols of happiness, longevity, and abundance.
CRAFTMANSHIP:
The craftsmanship of the order beautiful weaving is just excellent, and each of these is in clean and strong condition. These are all created in tightly woven brocade (or jacquard) and they are all
of the same medium to heavy weight woven silk. (The backs of the textiles are shown in the last
3 photos--and just as interesting as the fronts to see the weaving technique! Textile A shows
"floating threads" on the back where a soft black silk thread or yard created part of the design....
This type of threads on the back is called "continuous threads" and is quite common on obis
and on many jacquard textiles from many other cultures.)
Brocade and jacquard weaving is similar and I have seen many obi described using both of these words. Maybe some of you reading this will know more than I, but the techniques on these are one of the two. Brocade and jacquard weavings are highly regarded textiles in general and brocade weaving within the textile history of many world cultures for many centuries.
SUGGESTED USAGE
I believe these beautiful obi pieces would be perfect for a quilter or fiber artist who wants to create an Asian style art quilt.
Wall art with suitable matting and framing is another great use for these items.
If you are clever as a clothing designer, these pieces could be used nicely as skirt panels or
for the back of an evening jacket
Pillows could also work well (if they are mainly decorative so to be only gently used as washing of these textiles is not possible and even dry cleaning may not be guaranteed as safe for the gold metallic threads.
