I personally purchased this item while visiting London, England recently. A very nice silver-tone and crystal tie bar or cravat bar from the first part of the 1900s depicting a black horse ridden over grass by a jockey wearing red and white silks. The tie clip is solid -- no fear of losing it. The crystal is securely set on the bar. A vintage classic piece from the last century. Perfect for someone who is involved in equestrian sports, such as riding, jumping, racing or showing. Essex crystal pieces are formed from a rock crystal cabochon (polished domes of rock crystal with a flat base), an image or motif is then reverse carved into the flat base, and then painted, to give them impression of a three dimensional object or image encapsulated in the cabochon when viewed from above. They are not from the County of Essex in England, rather it's the name of this Victorian design, which became popular during the mid-19th century, and is arguably one of the more endearing and quirky fashions in jewellery from the era, remaining popular until the 1930s. Almost 2.5 inches (6.0 cm) in length. Silver metal with a solid backing to the crystal. Some wear to the surface of the crystal, as expected with a vintage piece.
