Mary & Her Little Lamb; The Tale of Two Lambs~

(Mary, the larger lamb pictured, is my adaption from an original Fuzzy Mittens knit lamb pattern with a personality that's all her own! )

Mary is knit from an Angora-like yarn that's super soft and lightly wispy; yarn that's 50% acrylic, 22% wool, 28% nylon. Her face is knit from 100% acrylic yarn.
She stands approximately 11 1/2” tall and when sitting is approximately 8 3/4”. I've hand embroidered her eyes, nose and mouth. Her arms and legs may appear slightly loose and dangly but in fact they would be extremely difficult to remove. One arm is sewn through the body to the other arm, back and forth many times connecting them to each other and to the body. Her legs are attached in the same manner as her arms.

Mary"s favorite color is green so I've knit her a pair of beautiful overalls in a yarn of variegated light-greens and soft shades of blue. The yarn is 75% acrylic and 25% wool. They keep her cozy-warm. The straps cross in back and tie at the shoulders and they're sewn closed to keep them tied. There is also a tie in the center back at the waist which has been sewn closed as well. Mary's overalls aren't meant to be removed. I've also knit a little white vest from a mohair-like acrylic yarn for her to wear with her overalls. She wears a matching light-green bow sewn onto her head, over her ear and a bracelet made of yarn with a needle-felted flower tucked into it…

I love watching the animals personalities develop as I create them. Mary is constantly entertains me with her amazing imagination. She watched very closely while I created her lamb toy. As I enjoy watching an animal emerge from my knitting needles, I was amused to see that Mary couldn't take her eyes off the shapes being built on my needles. She watched in utter silence as I knit her toy. her eyes growing large. When the toy lamb was almost finished and I was ready to tie a rope around it's neck so Mary would have a pull toy, she suddenly seemed upset. ”No! Please don't put a rope around her. I don't want to pull her anywhere! I'll teach her to walk and she can follow me everywhere just like Mary's Little Lamb in the Nursery rhyme. If she gets tired I'll carry her!” She suggested it would be nice if I'd tie a pretty bow around her lamb's neck. I surprised her and slipped a bell onto the ribbon as I tied it around her lamb's neck. She was so excited seeing the bell on her lamb that she jumped up and down saying, “Oh boy!! Now I know my lamb's name! Her name is Isabelle!” And there I was with two very happy lambs to introduce to all the critters in The Bunny Garden!!

Mary tugged my sleeve & reminded me that I haven't told you about Isabelle! Isabelle was designed by me. She is approximately 3 1/4" tall by 4" long. I had no pattern, she just evolved as I knit. Her body and head were first knit and stuffed. Then I decided she'd look more like a real lamb if I embroidered French knots over her body and head to give her a fleecy look. I hand embroidered her eyes, nose & mouth and crocheted her ears & tail…Suddenly I reached a stumbling point; legs!! Even being a pull toy she needed to have legs! I thought and thought about what I could do to give both a realistic appearance- and at the same time, be strong enough to support her weight. Hmm… Suddenly I order could see Isabelle with needle-felted legs over a wire armature so they can be gently posed. Because they are needle felted they are fragile so this must be done gently with as little handling as possible. If care is taken, they can be gently positioned so that Isabelle is balanced and can stand on her own. Isabelle and Mary instantly became best friends.Mary can either stand or sit but she needs something behind her to lean against. She and Isabelle look adorable displayed together on a shelf, on a bed, or any place out of harms way.

Mary and Isabelle aren't intended to be a young child's rough-play toy. Because of their knit nature, both do best with minimal handling; especially Isabelle. Mary's clothes aren't removable except for her knit vest. Her clothes, besides adding to her appearance, help to protect her from getting dirty or snagged on something. Should she need to be washed , she may be gently hand washed in her clothes, in warm water and a mild soap, then laid out to air dry. With gentle care they should both last many years and they make excellent heirloom gifts. . The yarn used to knit Mary is very wispy and at times can have long wisps standing out from her head and body. These will lie down easily with the gentle pat from the palm of your hand.

~*~ Mary & Her Little Lamb, created with love~ May they warm your heart & bring much joy!
