Antique Limoges Porcelain Tobacco Storage Containter w/ Pipe Lid - Tobacco Humidor order Jar - Giraud Limoges France

An antique decorative tobacco storage jar by Limoges, circa 1920s. This porcelain tobacco humidor jar is stamped "Giraud Limoges France" on the bottom - with the stamp dating the piece to the 1920s.

This tobacco container has a unique style with a figural lid featuring a smoking pipe. The underside of the lid has 4 claw shaped protrusions for holding a 'moist pad' to properly humidify the tobacco stored within. The decoration on the front of the jar is quite interesting - a depiction of a fish on a bed of greens with cherries, a lemon, order and walnuts. The artist initials "M.M" are painted in the lower right just below this image.

Many of these Limoges pieces were undecorated white ware blanks that were then shipped to other decorating facilities (some within France, and others being professional decorating factories in the United States). I believe this piece was originally a blank that was then exported and decorated in another facility - and was not decorated in the Limoges studio.

Overall, a beautiful vintage piece with a very unique decorated scene. The tobacco jar measures 8" in height to the top of the lid and approximately 4.75" in diameter. It is in excellent condition for its age - there are no chips or cracks to the porcelain. Very minimal wear to the painted decoration or the fish graphics.
