This beautiful AVeM Murano glass order bowl or tray was made in Italy c. 1950s.
It is a very dark ruby red glass (appearing black on the bottom) embedded with colorful murrine, zanfirico, and real silver leaf, giving a stunning opalescence. Needless to say, no two pieces were ever exactly alike.
It weighs 3 pounds and measures 9.5" by 6.75" and stands 1.5" high. (The skeleton key in the last picture shows relative size)
It is in excellent condition though there are scratches on the bottom where it would rest on a table or dresser.
Extremely sturdy, the bowls were sometimes sold as or used as cigar ashtrays.
AVeM (Arte Vetraria Muranese) was founded in 1932 and employed some of the best designers from Italy's oldest glass making families, including Antonia Ferro, his son Egidio, Emilio Nason, Vittori Zecchin, Giulio Radi and Galliano Ferro.
