Concerning Royal Tettau:
Royal Tettau were and are an extremely distinguished porcelain company. This well-known porcelain factory started after the German naturalist Alexander von Humbold recommended Johann Friedrich Paul Schmidt to the Prussian King, Friedrich Wilhelm II. The King was very interested in making Germany the center for the finest porcelain in Europe. Schmidt was joined in this venture by the brothers Wilhelm Heinrich Immanuel and Georg Christian Friedmann Greiner. On December 28, 1794, they received the required permissions from the King in order to begin production. The first Bavarian Königlich privilegierte Porzellanmanufaktur factory originally concentrated on household items such as well as coffee, tea and cocoa sets, but soon also started to create complete dinnerware settings. The original permit from the king was only valid for fifteen years, but it was soon transformed into an unlimited permission due to the success of the factory. The King was greatly pleased.
The factory continued to thrive but the original founders had retired, so Wilhelm Heinrich Immanuel Greiner's son Balthasar joined the company. But he did not share the same interest in the factory as his father had. Soon, he decided to sell it. In 1852, Ferdinand Klaus took over the company and continued to use the same markings. He also kept the product range the same and only made minor changes in decoration style, but he increased the staff. The addition of further decorators increased the workforce to around 70 people.
Only fourteens years later, the company was sold again. Wilhelm Sontag and Karl Birkner took over production of the Königlich privilegierte Porzellanmanufaktur. They continued to direct the company from 1866 until 1879. After Birkner retired from business, his place was taken by the investor and businessman Ludwig Maisel. In 1897, a large blaze completely destroyed the factory and based on the very promising business forecast, the owners instantly started to rebuild the factory. They decided the new factory would be much larger. Following the successful restart of operations, Maisel decided to retire and his former partner was joined by his sons.
From 1902, Sontag's sons were very active and in addition to running the business in Tettau, they also opened a decoration studio in the Thuringian town of Geiersthal. Here, they primarily decorated goods made by the Fraureuth Porzellan company. Over the next years, the factory was constantly modernized and prospered, leading to the transformation into a corporation in the year 1915.
Beginning around 1913, the very successful Tettau porcelain business had specialized in restaurantware and hotel porcelain as well as special sets for children; its very wide product range was exported worldwide. Only starting around 1930 did the factory actually produce large numbers of items decorated in 'Strohblume' (strawflower) and 'Zwiebelmuster' (Blue Onion) styles. Until around 1937, the factory employed only around 250 workers. It was able to get by with a smaller staff because of how modern and well-structured the factory was; in comparison, other companies at the same time employed far more people and created less output per year. This success did not go unnoticed and the company had for some time caught the attention of the Christian Seltmann company.
Wilhelm Seltmann, owner of the Porzellanfabrik Christian Seltmann in Weiden, became main shareholder of the factory in 1957. Shortly afterwards, he took over completely, integrating it into the family-owned Seltmann Weiden group, but only after he had transformed the Tettau factory into a limited liability company. More recently, because of mounting competition from cheap imports from the Far East, the production, sales and administration of Königlich priv. Tettau have been moved to the location of the Seltmann Group Rudolstadt / Volkstedt and the Erbendorf plant. They are still in production.
Perceived variations in color are due to lighting.
