A pre-owned "Block Lamp" by Finnish designer Harri Koskinen, and produced by Design House Stockholm. This example comes with the glass block only, and not the cord but could easily added back to create an ambient light or used as is as decor or bookends. It is in good pre-owned condition with some light surface scratching but overall shows nicely. Zoom in on photos.
It is a seemingly simple design of a lightbulb held inside two shaped pieces of clear glass. After designing the lamp in 1996, Koskinen first went to Iittala, who turned him down. The Block Lamp has been part of MoMA's permanent collection since 2000, and has been showered with design awards including: Excellent Swedish Design in 1998, the Design Plus Award at the Ambiente Trade Fair in Frankfurt in 1999 as well as the Best New Product at the Accent Show in New York in 1999.
approx. overall measurements 4" x 6.3" x 3.5"
The Harri Koskinen Block Lamp is a contemporary collector's piece. Two translucent glass blocks are hand-cast at high heat for durability and unique texture. The shape of a lightbulb is completed when they are placed together, and an LED lightbulb with cord can fit perfectly into place. Part of the Museum of Modern Art New York collection since 2000, the block lamp has been a favorite since its inception in 1996. Designed by Harri Koskinen, the lamp continues to be among Design House Stockholm's most popular products and has numerous design awards and accolades to its credit. Give your home or office a Scandinavian luminosity with the iconic Harri Koskinen Block Lamp.
The idea for the Block Lamp was born during a workshop at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. The students were given an assignment to design a gift for a wedding. ”I had this simple form that I wanted to cast in glass, and got the idea to 'wrap' something into the glass. I first tried a couple of snaps glasses, but then the same thing happened like always when I'm in the design process – at a subconscious level I started reducing.” Each part of the block lamp is hand cast and undergoes an extremely long cooling process to avoid cracking later on if exposed to strong temperature changes. The matte bulb shape is sand-blasted.
