Fifteen years ago, she was a Rockport, Mass., artist making pot holders, quilts and T-shirts using fabric she'd handprinted with stamps made from potato wedges. Working out of a cooperative craft gallery, she mixed her paints in egg cartons and sold her goods to the public and to five specialty stores. Her lifestyle was anything but glamorous. But with the encouragement of business partner Peter Wagner, Olsen began to grow her wearable-art business in 1984. She hired a New York factory to silk-screen her fabrics rather than print them herself.
