This listing is for a 2020-P Proof Basketball Hall of Fame silver dollar. This unique coin has been certified by PCGS as "First Day of Issue" and PR70DCAM, and it's housed in a tamper-evident slab with a bright orange core.
The Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Program (June 4, 2020 release) was a program that benefitted the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. The commemorative coin program celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Naismith Memorial, and a portion of the initial purchase price from the US Mint went to the Basketball Hall of Fame. As you might expect, these program coins are no longer available from the US Mint.
The program had 7 types of coins: $5 gold; 50c clad; and a 1 troy ounce pure silver dollar in both uncirculated and proof finishes. The Kids Set included an "enhanced uncirculated" clad half dollar. The coins are unique in a couple of aspects. First, the common obverse of each coin is concave, and the reverse depicts a ball going through a hoop. Second, and even more unique than a concave coin, is that these 2 coins are the first COLORIZED coins in the US Mint history!
Initial buyers had a choice of plain or colorized versions. The ball on the back of the 50c coin is full color, with a bright orange ball with black lines, and a red-rimmed net with white netting. It's a very cool coin! With the ball on the back of the Silver Dollar, the black lines of the ball are colorized, and the red rim and white net are a striking contrast against the silver.
We were lucky to get a few Basketball Hall of Fame coins signed by basketball greats! Check out our other signed coins while you're here.
We also have quite a few non-signed Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of fame coins, most of which are in the original mint packaging order. You'll find them in the Commemorative Coins category.
