Her backstory;

Born to a tribe of merfolk some sixteen winters ago, Me'ri was a curious child, often playing hide and seek with other fry in the vast kelp forests surrounding her home colony. She would hunt for pearls along with other kids, her keen eyes serving her well in the murky waters of Brinebay, the young girl exceedingly good at spotting the spiny clams lodged among the corals. Melodic voice and her cheerful nature brought Me'ri many friends, the young mergirl ever lacking company - it seemed that everyone wanted to play with her, her charms allowing her to make friends easily. Known for her voice, Me'ri began an apprenticeship under a merwoman called Jar'vi the Silverfin, a famous spell-singer and lore keeper. Under Jar'vi's careful guidance Me'ri learned to use her voice to call upon the magic that was in her, the young mergirl taking delight in every new trick she learned. Soon, she was able to call forth a light that would dance around her as well as sing a soothing song that could put even a fierce shark to sleep.
As she grew older, Me'ri earned many suitors, tales of her beauty and wealth reaching faraway colonies. Many young mermen made a hopeful voyage to Me'ri's home colony, only to be turned down, the young merwoman preferring her freedom to mingle and mate as she saw best. Love, Me'ri though, was much like the sea, vast and unbound. She saw no sense in a traditional union as her people saw it, wanting to live her life only for herself. While Me'ri lacked no friends, the elders of her colony grew disgruntled with her attitude, seeing her as a threat to the Songs of the Seas, a series of ancient laws and rules passed from generation to another by spell-singers and bards. As the elders grumbled and grumbled, Me'ri became an anathema, her old friends and lovers avoiding her, if only to avoid being associated with a deviant and heretic. Saddened by the betrayal of her kith, yet unwilling to change her ways, Me'ri packed her belongings and left her colony for good. If her people would not have her, she would forge order her own destiny beneath the waves.
