order is a raku ceramic sculpture 3" X 5" X 6" fired by the raku process. Western style raku is inspired by a traditional Japanese raku firing process. This involves removing my bisque fired ceramic sculpture or pottery from the kiln while at bright red heat (1750+-degrees) and placing it into containers with combustible materials. Once the sawdust, paper, and straw ignites, the containers are closed. The fire then seeks oxygen from the metal oxides in the glazed artwork which brings the metal to the surface creating a metallic glaze. During the process of intense reduction, a smokey atmosphere is created, which affects the colors. The drastic thermal shock may produce cracking, known as crackling, one of the desired outcomes in raku. Due to the many variables, each firing is unique. The finished piece looks incredible with variations of color, smoke, and/or metallic shine.
