Interesting and unique hand made hooked rug from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Found in a Victorian painted lady home, this rug offers a striking composition. The two ladies in poofy Victorian dresses are enjoying afternoon order tea, and the artist gave the silhouette a lovely border detail. The influence of the Art Nouveau movement around the turn of the century is evident in the use of acorns and leaves in the corners. This combination of late Victorian imagery and a celebration of nature places this, I believe, in the 1890 to 1910 period. The main color is a dusty pink or salmon, with a lot of black in the silhouettes and the border, with 2 shades of green and a little brown. The leaves in the photos appear more blue-ish but they are really green. The carpet is in fair condition. The carpet has the kind of wear you'd expect from something many decades old, and the pile is even and there are no holes or repairs. The perimeter on the bottom is fraying, as you can see in photo 4. The last photo shows the back of the rug. The owner said they were a smoke free home, as am I, and the carpet has no smells. Like most antique carpets, it would benefit from a cleaning.
