Here we have for you a rare and hard-to-find vintage 800 German silver and enamel souvenir spoon depicting Burg Bazar in Budapest. Another name for this place is Buda Castle Garden Bazaar. It is located south of the Chain Bridge and Clark Adam Square in Budapest.
The word 'bazaar' may suggest a collection of shops or some kind of market, but that is not the case. Actually, the Bazaar that is the subject here could more accurately be called a Cultural Palace with an Ornamental Garden south of the Buda Castle, making a beautiful entrance to the royal complex from the riverbank by the Danube.
The garden and its buildings were built between 1875 and 1883 from the plans of one of Hungary's leading architects -- Miklos Ybl. This complex of buildings was constructed for Queen Elisabeth of Hungary. It has been a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. This means it is a site of "exceptional universal value" and its protection and maintenance is provided by and supported by participating states according to the World Heritage Convention.
Between World War 2 and the 1980s, the Buda Castle Garden Bazaar was turned into a youth center. Until 1984, it functioned as an open air disco and concert venue. Today it is more like an art venue for exhibitions, concerts, dance shows, guided tours, and film screenings. And it features a lovely flower garden and park that is a very popular spot for proposals and weddings.
On top of being a desirable item for any collector, this spoon would be a phenomenal anniversary gift for any couple who became engaged or got married at this site.
The spoon bowl is decorated with a beautiful enamel depiction of the Bazaar. Note the perfect condition of the enamel. And that it says 'BUDAPEST BURG BAZAR' (with one 'a'). The detail work around the spoon bowl is really lovely too.
The handle stem has nice detail, and the finial at the top of the handle depicts the cities of Buda and Pest with the Danube River flowing between them. The enamel here is in great condition also. And note the nice cut out work around the finial.
The rear of the finial is stamped with the German hallmark of a crescent moon to the left of a crown, '800' and 'S'.
The spoon is in vintage condition with only light signs of age, as seen in the photos, and measures 5.5" in length. Coming in at just over 20 grams, it has a very satisfying weight to it as you hold it in your hand.
