The Tragic Story Behind Pablo Picasso's Guernica:

Guernica is a mural-sized oil painting on canvas by Spanish artist Pablo Picasso completed in June 1937. Standing at 3.49 meters tall and 7.76 meters, the large mural shows the suffering of people wrenched by violence and chaos. Prominent in the composition are a gored horse, a bull, and flames.
The painting was created in response to the bombing of Guernica, a Basque Country village in northern Spain, by war planes at the request of the Spanish Nationalists.

Picasso summed up his decision in 1937: “I have always believed and still believe that artists who live and work with spiritual values cannot and should not remain indifferent to a conflict in which the highest values of humanity and civilisation are at stake.”
"A work of art must make a man react ... It must agitate him and shake him up."

While Picasso was living in Nazi-occupied Paris during World War II, one officer allegedly asked him, upon seeing a photo of Guernica in his apartment, “Did you do that?” Picasso responded, “No, you did.”
