Illustrations Tipped-in title page titled “The Great West/The Vast, Illimitable, Changing West!” Five maps and 24 colored full page illustrations, including wagon trains, gold digs, Native American encampments, battles, prairie dogs, etc.
Background Henry Howe was a native of New Haven, Connecticut and after moving to Cincinnati wrote and published a number of popular regional historical works. In The Great West he fed the public's fascination with the promise of Manifest Destiny with tales of riches, perils, and derring-do. .
Price One of the 24 plates from this book – “Caravan of Emigrants for California…” is being offered on eBay for $45 plus $3.95 order shipping. Picclick sold a copy of the book for $89.95, but cites a high range price of $199.
