This tea bowl, or chawan in Japanese, is wood-fired in an anagama kiln order supported on sea shells gathered on the Oregon Coast, which leave their designs behind near the bottom of the piece. The bowl is made of a darker stoneware clay and glazed with an iron barring shino style glaze. The subtle streaking and spotting is reminiscent of the "hare's fur" and "oil spot" designs found in classic temmoku tea bowls.
Artist, potter, and teacher. My work includes sculptures, tea ware, and a deep respect for the communities and environment that sustain my making and our world. I have taught workshops, participated in artists residencies, and exhibited my work internationally, most recently at the first Taiwan International Chawan Festival in 2019. I am also currently at work constructing a wood fired kiln outside my studio, with help from collaborators and recycled materials.
