A very special Tibetan Phurba
A magical piece! I was able to purchase the Phurba from a Tibetan at the Swayambhubath Stupa in Kathmandu.
It is very heavy, weighs about 700 grams and is made of solid dark bronze. A dark red cloth is wrapped around it. This is often done to pay homage. It is already an old piece and is beautifully crafted, very fine with many details.
The Phurba is energetically very strong and feels very good in the hand!
Total length: 25cm long, up to 5cm thick.
The meaning of the Phurba:
The Phurba is a protective symbol and is used in Buddhism to ward off negative influences.
On top you can see faces of demons. These are supposed to keep evil away. According to the belief, they are former demons who joined Buddhism. The three-edged blade of the Phurba comes out of a dragon's mouth. On the blade sits a snake, it is the protector of Buddhist teachings.
This is how it is used:
In Tibetan rituals, fruit is used to form the shape of a demon. There is a purification through prayer, protection by putting on a ritual robe, invocation of the protective deities. Then a longer ritual follows, in which mantras are spoken again and again and finally the Phurba is pushed into the fruit figure under proclamation of a "completion mantra". Therefore fruits are used, because fruits are life carriers and thus representative for other life (e.g. the help-seeking human order being) can absorb the demonic forces.
